Glossary

A quick reference for the vocabulary you'll meet while learning about the Flare networks technology. Terms are listed alphabetically.

Application
A small program deployed to the networks that runs consistently across every participating computer.
Attestation
A verifiable statement, backed by many independent participants, that something is true.
Base layer
Another name for a Layer-1 — the foundational network everything else is built upon.
Decentralisation
Distributing control across many participants instead of concentrating it in one central authority.
Enshrined protocol
A service built directly into the foundations of the networks rather than added on afterwards.
FAsset
A representation, within the Flare networks, that lets an external asset be used inside Flare applications in a decentralised way.
FXRP
A specific FAsset used within the Flare networks, enabling an external asset to be represented and used inside Flare applications.
FDC
Flare Data Connector — a system for confirming that a specific event happened on another system.
FTSO
Flare Time Series Oracle — a system for delivering regularly-updated data series to applications.
Interoperability
The capacity of different systems to share and make use of one another's information.
Layer-1
The foundational network that applications are built on top of; provides security, coordination and execution.
Node
One of the many independent computers that together run and secure the networks.
Oracle
A trusted bridge that brings outside information into a decentralised system in a verifiable way.
Participant
Any independent operator helping to run, secure, or supply information to the networks.
Protocol
An agreed set of rules that lets systems communicate and cooperate consistently.
State
A snapshot of the current condition of a system — what is true right now.
Time series
Data that updates over time, such as a value that is refreshed at regular intervals.
